  • I’ve learned so much over the past few weeks, about how my privilege has served me in ways I didn’t even notice. I’ve learned about the struggles and heartache people of colour have had to endure. I’ve learned about how not being racist is not enough. I need to be anti-racist. I’ve been doing my work, quietly and consistently. And I know I’ve got a long way to go. (If you want to learn more too, go and look at @iwrotealettertomylove @ka_jillofalltrades @ndibambe stories ).

When I launched Signing Baby last year, it was important to me to ensure that the dictionary of signs reflected people of all races and abilities, but when it came to choosing influencers and bloggers to help me spread the word about my business, consciously choosing parents of colour was not something I thought about. I asked @ndibambe to collaborate with me simply because I loved her feed, her photos and the messages of gentle parenting she promotes. I realize now that that’s not good enough! I need to do more. So in the next few weeks I will be reaching out to parents of colour to invite them to work with me, as I get back onto the business bandwagon. (2020 has completely distracted me from my business and I’m going to be focusing on SB a lot more now.) I need your help though. While I’d love to feature families of colour, I realized that I’m not following many 🤦🏼‍♀️ And that needs to change! Please will you tag your favourite family accounts on this post so that I can follow along and continue learning how to be a better ally, better human, and better business owner.

I can’t do a lot, but I can commit to unlearning, re-learning, and doing better. Will you join me?

  • The Signing Baby ebook includes a dictionary of 100 signs for you and your baby to learn together. However, many babies will invent their own signs for certain words - like Stevie did here. This is totally ok! As long as you and your baby understand each other, the sign works. You should continue using the correct sign, and eventually most babies will switch to the proper sign when they’re ready. It’s a wonderful demonstration of how our babies are able to tell us what they want, and understand how communication works. .

  • Future signing baby right here! My Jessi is almost 4 months old, and I can’t wait to start signing with her. Now that she’s getting more alert and interactive I have found myself instinctively signing certain things with her now and again, just out of habit. 😂
Parents often ask when the right age is to start signing, and my answer is simple. You can start from around 6 months of age, and any child who is not yet talking fluently will benefit from learning, regardless of their age. So children who are slower to talk, or those with developmental delays will benefit from learning how to sign even if they’re older. .

  • One of the first signs most children learn, is MORE. It’s one of the easier ones for them to master physically, but it’s also easy to learn because babies constantly ask for more! More sweets, more juice, more games, more TV, more time. How many times has your baby asked for more of something in the last few weeks? Just think of how all that practicing would have helped them learn the sign - they could have had it nailed by now! I’d love to help you and your baby learn how to sign, there’s lots more info about baby signing on our website (link in bio) so please have a read if you’d like to know more. .
